My TIAA portfolio
Design System Manager build out
Our mission in creating a new TIAA design system - was to allow teams to design contextual experiences with efficiency, brand continuity, and emotional connection across all channels; responsive applications, mobile apps, print materials and videos.
Our primary objectives included:
- ease of maintenance
- better usability
- common nomenclature
- atomic design structure
- W3C’s web standards
Note: Requirements were based off of input collected during digital style guide focus groups and executive stakeholder interviews.
30,000ft view of TIAA.org's digital landscape
As a team we were asked by key stakeholders to illustrate differences in layouts and interactive patterns across TIAA.org’s digital landscape. A heat map was used to represent scale among our five platforms (secure, non-secure, third party applications and old legacy).
Documenting standardized guidelines
Our team's mission was making sure every asset was carefully designed in order to support contextually-senstive digital experiences that consistently delivered on our brand promise and values.
As part of our change control process each new pattern or asset was carefully reviewed - allowing us to maintain a design system that was learnable and usable.
Starndardizing error guidelines was one of our most complex efforts.
- Inline errors: Triggered inline with a field or interactive option.
- Page level errors: Apply to a whole page – these are major fails.
- Conditional error: Appear if specific conditions are met or certain selections are made. (breakdown of server-side vs. client-side).
Creating delightful and frictionless experiences
Experimenting with layout, typography and animation are just a few examples in creating a delightful and frictionless user experience.
My goal as a designer is to ensure user's are confident about what they are looking at and how to easily take the next best action for their benefit.
Creating designs through testing and learning
Our team's aim was to build experiences based on what we know, not on assumptions. The digital styles and standards team continously looked to add value to our products and services through research, continual testing, and accessibility alignment.
Every pixel, word, and interaction needs to count to make for a successful and intuitive experience for all users.
Design standards confluence page
UX's digtial styles and standards confluence board was an additional tool offered to promote our process, broaden our exposure, and strengthen our culture across TIAA.
I concepted all sections of information, content and visual design. My goal was to elevate the diverse amounts of responsibilities and relationships our team held, regardless of limited resources.
Just after two months, participation to weekly style guide check-ins increased by 30% — resulting in smoother development hand-offs.
